Recently, my friend Joey was released from the TDCJ Penitentiary. He served 2 years here, along with another 2 years in the TYC Juvenile Detention center on charges of aggravated assault. Of course I’m going to ask him questions about jail. I mean, what the fuck?

Did people rape each other a lot in jail?
- It Happens.
A Lot?!
- Probably more than I know. Cause you don’t always hear about it, you know?
Were the officers mean?
- Um.. no. For the most part, they were pretty cool. But there were that could be dicks.
Did you have a toilet and a sink in your cell?
- In TDCJ, Yes. In TYC, No.
So.. people could see you poop and pee?
- Yea. Your cell-mate could be sittin’ right next to you while you’re takin a shit.
What was the food like?
-Shitty as hell. Turkey.. Turkey.. Turkey.
What did you eat for breakfast?
- We eat a lot of grits, eggs, and baloney also. Sometimes we get waffles!
What about lunch and dinner?
- lunch and dinner? hm… Turkey. They gave us chicken sometimes.. or hamburgers. But they would give us soy patties. There was a lot of noodles for some reason. Like.. macaroni noodles.. But that shit was not macaroni.
Did people escape while you were there?
- no.
Are there a lot of gay guys?
- yea. There’s a lot of gay guys.
Were you scared?
-Yes.
Why?
- Why wouldn’t you be? If you think about it, as soon as you get there, they get you ass naked to check you. And everybody’s watching you saying ‘fresh meat! fresh meat! I got him!’ I already knew I was either to going to have to fight or be somebody’s bitch.
What kinds of things did you do for fun?
- I played scrabble, chess, read, talked.. We traded stories a lot. We would always talk about our families and friends back home.
Did you ever cry?
- Yea, I cried. When I first got there. I probably cried for like.. maybe a month. I don’t even know how long, but it was like… maybe at least a month.
What was it like when you got out?
- It felt good, you know? I can’t really say I was happy, because I had so many friends and family in jail with me. There was a lot of really cool people that I knew I was going to miss in there. I was really excited though.. to get out.
What was the first thing you noticed you missed when you got out?
- Real food. hahaha because as SOON as I got out, I got a fucking burger. Triple meat, triple cheese, bacon, and jalapenos.. it was really good.
Now that you’re out, do you have anything you want to let anyone know about jail?
- Not everyone that goes to jail is a bad person. They just got caught making a bad decision. Everybody deserves a second chance. Some of those people are probably a lot better than a lot of people out here.
